We started with 13,000 square feet of space on the fourth floor, featuring 11 private offices, 8 dedicated desks, and 58 members who signed up in 2016. If you are one of those members who has been with us for ten years, thank you. We’ve watched businesses grow from one-person startups into full teams that outgrew our space and built spaces of their own. And just as we’ve watched entrepreneurs grow and ideas spark, we’ve grown too. Today, we have expanded to more than 104,700 square feet across two locations.
To celebrate, we’re sharing a unique look back with lists of ten, because ten years deserves more than a single story.
Top 10 Memories at The Mill
- The day we opened The Mill: On April 1, 2016 the energy in the space was heartwarming. After all the planning, construction, and barrier breaking, knowing that people truly enjoyed the space was validating, to say the least.
- The first business to sign a membership at The Mill: Tapp Network. They went on to build our portal, and continue to manage our website today.
- The first publication to share our story: Technical.ly On November 17, 2015 Tony Abraham’s article titled “Here’s a first look at The Mill, a new coworking space landing in Wilmington this spring: The Mill is set to open in the Nemours Building on April 1, 2016” launched.
- The Mill’s first art installation, curated and installed by a wonderful friend of The Mill: William Spiker. The entire community space was adorned with stunning sculptures and mill inspired paintings.
- The ping pong tournaments: when our fourth floor conference tables (regulation sized ping pong tables built by The Challenge Program here in Wilmington) became the stage for some serious competition, and Rob proudly claimed the very first win.
- Zipcode Wilmington’s move into their custom 7,200 SF suite: in October 2017, The Mill was energized by Zipcode Wilmington students and staff as they sparked innovation, learning, and growth in the heart of the city.
- FairSquare Financial: from one office, to 5, to a custom 30 person suite which they outgrew after several years (they moved onto their own private floor!), the team at FSF achieved their goals and were acquired by Ally Financial in a $750 million all cash deal.
- The day we opened The Mill Concord: on January 1, 2020, just a few months before the pandemic shutdown, The Mill overcame the challenges 2020 onward, and today boasts a near 100% occupancy rate.
- Our 3rd Floor ribbon cutting ceremony: with more than 100 guests on February 13, 2024, we celebrated our largest expansion to date. That day, we launched 38,000 more square feet of community space, conference rooms, offices, upgraded amenities, and connected spaces designed for collaboration and growth at what’s now known as The Mill at Market West.
- The renovation on the fourth floor: we unveiled major upgrades to our flagship 4th floor in celebration of our 10 year anniversary. Upgrades such as privacy curtains and carpeting for conference rooms, carpeted offices, and modern light fixtures throughout bring the decade old floor into 2026 while preserving the charm that has energized members and staff alike for all these years.
