In case you missed it, we got to be part of something really exciting — the grand re-opening and ribbon cutting for the $110 million redevelopment of Market West at 221 W Tenth redevelopment on Thursday, April 3rd. And yes, The Mill is part of the story!
We gathered alongside BPGS Construction, BPG360, our neighbors from Theatre N, CoreTen Fitness, Starbucks, Café Mezzanotte, management from The Standard apartments, as well as our members and friends, to celebrate this big milestone.
The event was hosted by the Buccini Pollin Group (BPG) and featured remarks from Wilmington Mayor John Carney, BPG executives, and Chris Buccini himself — who gave our founder, Robert Herrera, some well-deserved praise for his role in uplifting this city. BPG offers the “most modern office space in our region,” Chris said, “and that’s 100% because of The Mill.” “Robert has been the vision behind the office product” at Market West.
Our newly elected Mayor was equally thrilled about the project. “I’ve been your mayor for about two and a half months, and there’s nothing that makes a mayor happier than cutting a ribbon on a complex like this. I can’t even imagine what Wilmington would be like without the development done by BPG… but we don’t have to imagine it — we’re building a really exciting new downtown for our great city,” expressed Mayor John Carney.
“Market West represents a downtown district, it’s like the Market Street Corridor, it’s like the Riverfront, it’s like what will become Riverfront East. Market West is the epicenter, the home of the state’s entrepreneur ecosystem at The Mill – which by the way celebrated 9 years [on April 1st]... In New Castle County, all of the incredible fintechs and startups, small law firms, [and] marketing firms that have come out of [The Mill] and grown. We’re very lucky to have the Delaware Prosperity Partnership (DPP) … one of the big engines of The Mill and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, [as] a spark of what goes on at The Mill,” remarked Chris Bucchini, founder of the BPG.
BPG bought the Nemours Building from the DuPont Company way back in February 1999 — and that move kicked off something big for both Wilmington and BPG. It was one of the first office-to-residential conversions in the city, and really the beginning of BPG’s story in a lot of ways. The building itself has quite a story. Completed in 1941, the Nemours Building is a classic Art Deco high-rise and one of the largest office buildings in Wilmington. It’s historically certified and located right in the heart of the central business district. Fast forward to today — BPG has invested over $100 million into transforming it, with 250 modern apartments already completed and another 100 on the way in the next few months.
