Nine Years Strong: Building the Future of Work at The Mill

By The Mill

Nine years ago, on April 1, 2016, The Mill opened its doors in Downtown Wilmington with a bold vision: to shake up the modern workspace.

“I was obsessed with creating my own version of a coworking space. When I first got started, I was approached by a handful of very prominent people who were adamant that the last thing Wilmington needed was another coworking space. They argued that I did not understand the local market. I was not treated as local myself, even though I grew up in Dover. It was scary.

Our friends at the The Buccini/Pollin Group (you may have heard of them if you have not been living under a rock), were the first to take a chance on The Mill. I was 29 years old when I first pitched the idea to Chris Buccini, but I don’t think he knew that. His confidence in me and my vision for The Mill is something I will never understand or forget.” [1]

What started as a 13,000-square-foot office space on the fourth floor has blossomed into a buzzing coworking community spanning a whopping 104,700 square feet in The Mill at Market West.

Today, we’ve got 65 offices across two floors, plus 28 Dedicated Desks tailored to different work styles. And let’s not forget about Wilmington’s only arthouse cinema —Theatre N. This 221-seat auditorium isn’t just for movies and concerts; it’s also a dynamic event space where Mill members can host meetings and presentations, complete with cutting-edge digital projection and sound technology.

In 2020, right before the world shut down, we took a leap beyond the city limits, opening The Mill Concord in Concord Plaza—just off Route 202.

“2019 was was the most profitable year we ever had. I was like, I’ve done it, I figured this out — because it’s years of grinding. I was counting my distribution checks before 2020 punched us in the face. But we got through.” [2]

This 20,000-square-foot expansion brought 44 offices and 18 Dedicated Desks, creating the perfect home base for businesses looking for a vibrant, suburban workspace.

And we’re not done yet! Our third location at the Nylon Capital Center is set to open at the end of the year. It will feature fresh office layouts, a stunning community and event space, and a campus buzzing with retail, education, and entertainment options.

“You have to embrace the climate where you are, and I can see myself positioning The Mill here not just to rent office space, which it will have, but to become a place where even if your office is somewhere else, you want to come and be part of the community…” [3]

We are excited to welcome you all to The Mill Seaford, and look forward to embracing the organizations and companies that make this area so great.

As we hit this nine-year milestone, we’re feeling extra grateful for our members, partners, and the wider community. You’ve helped shape The Mill into more than just a workspace—it’s a place where creativity sparks, collaborations thrive, and big ideas take flight.

We know work is evolving, and so are we. That’s why we offer flexible workspaces and membership options that suit everyone, from solopreneurs to startups to established businesses looking for their next HQ.

With nine years behind us and an exciting future ahead, we’re raising a toast to innovation, growth, and the amazing people who make The Mill what it is.

And hey, next year, we hit the big 1-0! Stay tuned—there’s more to come!
