This March, The Mill is honoring women whose creativity, leadership, and vision inspire community and connection. We’re proud to spotlight acclaimed folk artist Eunice LaFate, one of Delaware’s brightest cultural voices, whose colorful storytelling captures resilience, empowerment, and the beauty of life.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, three of Eunice’s paintings honoring women are on display now through April 8th throughout the community spaces on the third and fourth floors at The Mill at Market West.
Artwork on Display
Each of these pieces celebrates women’s strength, spirit, and resilience:
- Empowered Women March – A powerful portrayal of women marching together in solidarity.
- Reaching for the Stars – A bright expression of women striving upward, embodying ambition and hope.
- “I Rise” – Inspired by Maya Angelou’s poem “Still I Rise.”
About the Artist
Eunice is a Jamaican-born, self-taught folk artist, educator, and social visionary. She recently received the Art Means Business Hall of Fame Award, presented by the Wilmington Delaware International Film Festival, which we highlighted in our February member newsletter.
Her work—full of vibrant, bold colors—reflects strength and humanity and reminds us how art has the power to tell stories that business alone cannot.
Eunice’s Journey Spans Far Beyond the Canvas
Before becoming one of Delaware’s most celebrated folk artists, Eunice worked as a banker, educator, human services administrator, writer, and storyteller, bringing compassion and curiosity to every role. She began her artistic mission on Wilmington’s Eastside, where she opened a “safe-haven gallery” in her basement to help local youth explore creativity.
Since then, she has inspired students as a teacher at St. Peter’s Cathedral School, served as Artist in Residence at Friends Lower School, and taught in the Neighborhood House Summer Arts Program.
Her accolades reflect a lifetime of impact—from the Governor’s Award for the Arts (2014) to the Delaware Business Leaders Hall of Fame by Junior Achievers Delaware (2024) and, most recently, the Art Means Business Hall of Fame Award (2026).
Eunice’s Gallery
In 2015, Eunice opened the LaFate Gallery Vision Center on Lower Market Street, a space that merges education and creativity through workshops such as Bonding Through Creativity, which encourages parents and children to connect through art.
Her gallery’s theme, “Rebounding from Grief to Growth,” captures the resilience that defines both her personal journey and her mission to uplift the community through creativity.
